Quick Review: Monitoring & Control
As you no doubt recall from class, monitoring and control are the mirror images of project selection and planning:
- Selection criteria = what is monitored
- Planning details = what is controlled
Monitoring is all about gathering and sharing information:
- Data collection
- Data recording
- Task owners report to the PM, the PM reports to upper management and other stakeholders
The information collected through monitoring allows the PM to compare progress to the plan and take action in order to align actual project activities with the plan. The alignment process is called controlling.
Controlling translates the knowledge you've gained by collecting and analyzing data into adjustments and fine-tuning of the plan so that actuals more closely approach desired goals. Our need to keep projects on track is what drives the need for monitoring progress.
